Go Postal For Ramona

A friend of mine (Jen) lives in Ramona, Kansas: a tiny town with a population of around 100. They have one operating business in town: the post office. Sadly, this post office is being targeted for closure, due to low sales (they made $4,000 less than the cutoff of $27,500 this year). This is about much more than a post office, for the residents of Ramona. My friend writes: “Kathy, the Postmaster, is also a major contributor to social networking, helps the neediest among us to get in touch with help, and even checks up with her patrons [especially the elderly]. As a matter of fact, her concern about her fellow Ramonans led her to find the body of one of our elderly citizens after he’d passed.”

The residents of Ramona are rallying to help save their post office, but they need our help. Here’s what you can do:

1. Like  their page on Facebook: Go Postal for Ramona

2. Send Mail! Send your postcards [or notes in envelopes] with your name and address, and “Go Postal” written somewhere on the card to:

J. Hathaway
PO Box 24
Ramona, KS 67475

If you just want to support the cause, send a card or note to K. Matkins, Postmaster, Ramona, KS 67475.

As an expression of her gratitude, Jen is running a contest: She will put all the postcards she receives into a bag, and draw three. The first place winner will receive an original colored pencil drawing of the Ramona Post Office! The second runner up will receive a signed 8″x 10″ print of the same art work, and the third runner up will receive a set of 4 notecards with the drawing on the front, with envelopes.

You can see more of Jen’s art on her website, http://jenhath.com/

A stamp now costs 44 cents. You’ve probably got more than that sitting under your couch cushions. (You just checked, didn’t you?) What are you waiting for? Get busy sending mail…it doesn’t matter if you write haikus, or love letters, or if you draw doodles, or even if you send your shopping list one letter at a time…just as long as you send mail to Ramona!
